Region Profile

Region 9 - Far West Region

Description:
Region 9 is the most far flung region in American Mensa, stretching from Utah to the island of Guam. This region includes the entire state of Utah, Southern Nevada, the Arizona chapters, the four chapters of Southern California, and Mensa Hawaii (which includes Guam). As American Mensa has grown and shifted over the years, Region 9 has developed as well. Originally part of what was the West Region of the North American Mensa Committee established in July of 1965, much of this area was later designated the Southern California Region in 1980. We became the Far West Region in 1985. Greater Los Angeles Area Mensa, the first chapter to be established outside of New York in 1962 anchors this dynamic and independent region of Mensans. Utah Mensa also dates from 1962. 1964 brought us Channel Islands Mensa, Greater Phoenix Mensa, and San Diego Mensa. 1965 saw the birth of Mensa Hawaii, Orange County Mensa, Tucson Mensa, and Southern Nevada Mensa. This dynamic region includes innovators in official electronic communications, youth programs, hosting major national events, and maintaining a fun schedule of regional gatherings including Labor Day (Orange County Mensa), Thanksgiving (Greater Phoenix Mensa), Presidents Day (Greater Los Angeles Area Mensa), and Memorial Day (San Diego Mensa). We continue to grow and expand our schedule of gatherings as well as seeking more and more fun activities and programs for our local group members.
