Western Pennsylvania Mensa
Description:Western PA Mensa was founded around 1964. The original newsletter of the Pittsburgh Mensa chapter was called Mentholatum, circa May 1965. Due to political infighting in the early years, the local newsletter was dubbed "The Phoenix" to represent a group rising from the ashes. That name remains today.
Our membership currently hovers around 500, however, in the 1980s, we reached over 600. Their first Local Secretary in January 1964 was Anne Dempster. Western Pennsylvania Mensa held their first local gathering in October 1980. The first official Rivers 3 RG was held September 11 through 13, 1981. Since that time, the RG has been held on Labor Day weekend, and 2007 will mark their 26th consecutive RG.
Western Pennsylvania Mensa spans the western part of Pennsylvania from Lake Erie south to the West Virginia border, including parts of the West Virginia panhandle and a small section of eastern Ohio. To the east, the group extends to the Allegheny Mountains.
Founding Date:December 01 1964
